I spent this autumn afternoon at The High Line Hotel lobby bar, pausing for a moment amid the chaos of the city to re-center calmness and community. I met my friend Jaron there and we spent the next two hours on the velvet couch sipping lattes, catching up on each others’ lives, anticipating the arrival of the Wicked movie, debating the stereotypes of what our outfits said about us, editing my design portfolio* and choosing hope over despair. It felt like escapism, yet I was fully present and still in the same place. That, my fellow curious urban minds, is what good placemaking can do!
Here are some of my favorite hotel lobby bars in the city to do just that. They are especially cozy around the holidays.
The High Line Hotel, 180 10th Avenue
The Ludlow Hotel, 180 Ludlow Street
The Bowery Hotel, 335 Bowery
Ace Hotel Brooklyn, 252 Schermerhorn Street
