It’s been a while since we last spoke. I’ve locked myself in the library researching, reading, and writing my Master’s thesis on the intersection of urban planning and fashion retail. But as my March 25th deadline approaches, that means at least one good thing for all of us: spring is almost here.
We got a tease of it last week in New York. On a bright blue Sunday, my friend Jiji and I hopped in and out of cafes in SoHo. “What’s on your mood board for Spring?” she asked me midblock on Mercer Street.
I hadn’t really thought about it yet.
So, desperate for a break (read: distraction) from my research, here’s a curated list of curiosities for (almost) Spring, in no particular order.
ETHAN’S EIGHT things to see, do, read, wear, and inspire in March
THE NEW LOOK - this series on AppleTV+ dramatically unveils the rise of Monsieur Christian Dior following the liberation of Paris during World War II. For any history or fashion fans, call your mom and get her AppleTV login so you can binge-watch all of the episodes in one weekend. (Thanks, Mom!)
THE SPACE THAT KEEPS YOU - Jeremiah Brent’s first book taps into the emotional storytelling of designing one’s home, a large part of his own design ethos. It’s fresh and different from most interior design coffee table books in the best way possible. I’ll be taking notes as I get ready to move and redecorate apartments this summer. Well done, Jeremiah!…which brings me to my next point
JB’s PENCHANT for an ALL-BLACK OUTFIT - Jeremiah’s closet is basically my entire wishlist, all the time, every day. I know his day job is interior design, but I can’t help but be even more inspired by his personal style. At his book talk last month, he wore this chic black ensemble and I have a feeling it is Celine. Add to cart, please! He was recently interviewed by Christopher Fenimore for Esquire’s fashion column, which you can read here.
A bucket HAT - I’m debating on this raffia bucket hat from J.Crew. I’ve never worn a bucket hat before so I have no idea if it would look cool on my head, but perhaps I’ll try it out on a sunny Spring day. If I were going to the park or spending the day in the city, I’d style it with a burgundy or olive green crew neck tee, denim jacket, linen pants, sandals or sneakers, and a light sweater.
Eyeswooning INSPO on INSTAGRAM @LE_CIME - give them a follow for more dreamy content, like this photo of L’Institut Giacometti. Adding to my list for the next time I visit the City of Light.
MERCER STREET BOOKS & RECORDS - my friend Osaze and I recently spent an hour inside this tiny bookshop in NoHo one Friday afternoon. It felt like we had time-traveled back into an older day in New York. It’s a legendary spot that’s still around, selling used books and records. The owner was also nice enough to let us snap a few film photos :) By the way, my trench coat will be in heavy rotation this Spring.
POOR THINGS - if you haven’t seen this Golden Globe winner, and Oscar-nominated film, run to the nearest theater now! 10/10. Emma Stone delivers strong. While everyone is talking about the dance scene in Lisbon, I can’t stop thinking about the Paris in the snow scene. AND THE COSTUMES!
Immediately added a snip from this scene to my Pinterest. Copyright credit to the respective owner. THIS REMINDER - courtesy of my Pinterest feed algorithm. It’s now a fun pre-Spring wallpaper on my phone.
That’s all from the desk of ECF this week…see you again soon when I emerge from the library. Send any dark academia soundtracks and outfits my way.
